Breast MRI Results

I am looking for a way to learn about phrases that came up on my recent breast MRI print out. I am scheduled for a follow up Mammogram and Ultrasound but it's the waiting that is hard. When my doctor went over it I was numb and took in only a few key things.  I have 5 masses over both breasts.  Two have smooth margins and are probably part of the fatty hilum of the intramammary lymph nodes". Dr. says probably not worrisome. The other words that concern me are "lobulated mass with obscured margins" and "irregular enhancing mass with irregular margins".

The other thing I don't understand is "kinetic curve" and it's "Type I or II".

Anyone out there who knows medical terminology or a place I can go to learn about these words?

Thanks!

Judi

Hi - try "Google" with your phrases.  Can't tell you not to worry but I've been told by professionals that breast MRI's show up MANY false readings that end up to be benign and cause undue grief and anxiety along with tons of unnecessary biopsies.  That's not to say it is an unworthy test.
Good luck - keep us posted

Dear Judi:  MRI is a very sensitive test that is generally reserved for women who are at high risk or for staging known disease.  Because of the sensitivity of MRI, it produces a large number of false positive results (leading to unnecessary biopsy) and for this reason, should be done in combination with mammogram, ultrasound and clinical breast examination.  Kinetic curve and type l or type ll have to do with descriptors used to measure energy and describe the “masses.”  Out of context, these do not have specific meaning.  Our advice is to discuss this further with your doctor.  Without additional workup (possibly including biopsy), it is unlikely that your doctor or radiologist can say “for sure” what these masses may be.

Thank you.  That is what I did next.  Not sure the news is all that good with the phrases I entered and I am trying to stay positive until I ahve the follow up ultrasound and mammogram.  Thanks for the reassurance.
