Breast discharge only when squeezed

I have been having a watery fliud like discharge from both the breasts only when squeezed...It came to my notice around  9 mnths back..I did a prolactin level and it was normal...My doctor did'nt find it necessary to do a mammography..But when i checked it yesterday i cud squeeze out a few droplets of water like fluid form both the breasts and from multi ducts..My periods are very regular and normal..No other uneasiness...What can be the cause of this discharge..

Hi,

The cause of the discharge is probably that you keep squeezing your breasts to see if there is still a discharge...

Squeezing (even the pumping of the muscles in the breast that occurs with some weight lifting exercises) and sucking (related to nursing or other activities) can stimulate the breasts to produce fluid.

There are other causes of nipple discharge (more concerning is spontaneous leakage from just one breast), but since you've already had this checked out by your doctor you really have no reason to worry.

Best wishes,

Hi again,

The effect of an antidepressant would have worn off after a few months at most, so what you have is probably just a normal reaction to squeezing.

BTW, I have had just what you described for decades now.

After initially going through a bunch of tests, followed by yearly prolactin levels for a while (to make sure it wasn't on the rise--can be related to a pituitary microadenoma), my doctors all agreed we should just forget about it.

Unless you develop new symptoms, relax and enjoy your "kid." (If you can  relax when you have a 5-year-old, that is...)

You are entirely welcome!

Since your non-spontaneous discharge appears to be of the normal and common variety,  I didn't take  time yesterday to give you a fuller answer.

However, since you seem to be quite medically aware, here is some additional information, for general interest in the topic, or to share with someone else who is concerned about a nipple discharge:

Certain medications also increase the likelihood of discharge. (For example, I have had patients who had recently begun taking an antidepressant, without being informed that it could cause nipple discharge,, who then went to a doctor and  were immediately put through the anxiety and expense of a battery of tests including a CT scan, because  the doctor failed to ask about new medications they might be taking...)

There are certain times of life (due to hormone fluctuations) that discharge is more likely, and oral contraceptives can also have this effect.

Below is the link to an excellent post by zouzi, which describes the many  different types of discharge that can occur:
