Can I have implants after a lumpectomy?

The P.S. tells me that I am not eligible for implants after a lumpectomy, is this true?  If so, why?

Or, does he mean I am eligible right away and must wait a few years.

I would really like to save my breast but I know, since

Sherry:  My prayers are with you hun.  The scary part is that the drs really make it all your choice.  I too had a lumpectomy & a second surgery after that to remove further tissue.  The surgeon told me that there would be a difference in size & i had the right to choose a mastectomy.  I thought this might help you to make a decision.  While i am a little self concious about the size difference (which is not very noticable with a bra) i still have the feeling & sensation in the breast.  With the mastectomy i would not have had any feeling in the breast at all.  Whatever your choice hun, i wish you the best of luck & good health.

Dear Sherry T.  Most doctors will not do a lumpectomy if it results in a cosmetically poor result.  In these cases, most recommend mastectomy with some form of reconstruction.  The reason your plastic surgeon has likely said no to implants after lumpectomy is because radiation therapy is needed after lumpectomy and surgery on radiated tissue can result in a myriad of complications.  You should have a thorough discussion with both your breast surgeon and plastic surgeon to determine what will be the best option for you.
