Nipple Discharge

I had my yearly mammogram 11/20/2008.  It was normal...but just yesterday I noticed some bloody discharge in my bra cup and on a t-shirt I had slept in the night before.  This concerns me...even though the mammogram was normal, is it possible something could have been missed?  I don't feel any lumps and there is no soreness in my breast.  It seems the discharge is from one breast only.  Thanks!

It is important that you see your doctor concerning your discharge.  I had a blood tinged discharge from my breast and normal findings on my mammo.  My dx was dcis, ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a cancer that is confined to the breast but often times does not show up on mammos.  Your doctor may take a sample of the discharge for testing, or might send you for a breast mri or biopsy.  Mammograms are a great tool for detecting breast cancer but they are not foolproof, nor do all breast cancers present as lumps.  The safest bet is to see your doctor.

Warmest Regards,
Sue

Hi Lynn,

I'm not sure what's going on, but I suggest you make a call and appointment with your OB/Gyne.  Speak to the nurse and find out what she thinks, then go in and see your dr.  Bloody discharge is not normal but I can't tell you necessarily what it is!  It does not seem to be consistent with breast cancer, but it's best to be safe and get it checked out.

Warmly,

Chris
