I recently went for my first mammogram and was notified that I needed to return for a diagnostic due to asymetrical desity in my left breast. I am terrified ! I have been put at ease some by researching sights like this one but again I am still very afraid. Can anyone add any insight. I have not had any problems before nor due I have any family history of breast cancer.
If you are uncomfortable waiting six months, I would either go for an ultrasound or see a breast surgeon. It is your body! Several months ago I had an ultrasound which showed two nodules & the radiologist gave me the option to either wait 6 months or have them biopsied. The breast surgeon then asked me how I felt so I had biopsies done & they removed one of them a month later.
Lesion was benign but I go back today for results & followup.
2 weeks ago noticed a lymph node in neck. Also had been very tired for the previous weeks before that. Soreness in groin. Dr. wanted to see me, examined me and only found the one large node. She checked blood work (thyroid, sed rate, CBC) which came back normal.
Had my baseline mammogram and it came back a 0.5 cm equal density oval nodule in left breast in upper outer quadrant posterior position, most likely lymph node.
Category 3 - Follow-up mammogram in 6 months.
I also have been having pain in my left collar bone (the lymph node in my neck is on the right side though).
I am feeling uneasy about waiting 6 months to recheck this.
Should I be?
Dear flaky, It is not unusual to be asked to come back for repeat views, particularly after a first mammogram. There is nothing to compare to, so any difference will be checked out a little closer. Sometimes breast tissue folds on itself and a second exam using a smaller paddle can clarify the situation.
