My Ultra Sound Shows Nothing

NOTHING should up on the Ultra Sound.  I had a biopsy in 2004 that came up negitive for cancer. Now I have a lump the size of large walnut of of its shell.  It is on my left breast, next to my scare from my previous biopsy and right on top. The lump is not marble shaped, it is all weird and it is very hard.  I went for an Ultra Sound on Monday and the Dr. saw nothing.  Not a cyst, tumor, fibroid mass or anything. She felt it again, not hard to miss, and said "It is there for sure, however the Ultra Sound is not picking anything up."  "I am confussed." she said. Then she told me that she will send the report to my Surgen and tell her that the lump is there, but unidentifiable and it is up to her what the next step would be.

My concern is that when I went in for the surgens exam, she felt it and said that she was concerned about it, but I am young (28) and shouldn't worry about it.  Not sure what to think or do.... Should I get a second opionon???

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance!

My doctor called me today and said it looks like nothing and we could just leave it.  I told I would feel better if we took it out and she said if it would make me not stress... then she would.

Thanks for all of your help!!

Bless my family doctor who told me that the gold standard for breast lumps is to get them out.  My surgeon, the radiologists for both my mammo and ultrasound all said it is nothing.

I insisted they take it out and my  second surgeon said  You are right. And I am taking the whole thing out as needle biopsies are sort of hit or miss.

Yes, I had cancer.  Get it out for piece of mind!  It is most likely nothing but still do it. You will never regret it!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Dear Twobeautifulgirls2love:  Different tests give different pieces of information.  An ultrasound is used to try to tell the difference between a lump and the surrounding tissue.  Sound waves “bounce” off different types of tissues and then a picture is created showing the distinctions.   For instance a fluid filled cyst would show up on an ultrasound because the fluid “sounds” different and would create a different picture than fat tissue.  The ultrasound is less accurate at picking up a lump that is made up mostly of fat, because it would “sound” similar to the surrounding tissue.  Without further evaluation including physical examination it is difficult to advise you as to how concerned you should be.  For your peace of mind and to be sure you may want to have this checked by a breast specialist.  These can usually be found in large academic centers.
