What do P53 readings mean

My daughter, 33, with ductal invasive BC has a P53 reading of 3+...she had a 10 cm tumor, left breast mastectomy, and 6 rounds of dose dense ACT...is scheduled for radiation in one week..what does the P53 indicate as far as survival rate? She is having the right breast and ovaries removed also later in the year as prophylactic  measure.Thanks.

Dear cissy55:  P53 is one of the tumor characteristics that are checked in order to help determine the prognosis and recommendation for further treatment. It is a tumor supressor gene that when mutated may impact the prognosis for women with breast cancer.  There is some evidence that those who have positive p53 may have poorer prognosis than those who do not have the gene.  P53 is not used exclusively to make any decisions regarding treatment or prognosis. It is simply additional information used to create a more complete picture.
