husband has a thick crusty Areola area

husband has a thick crusty areola area.  He also has another lesion on his left should that has caused me to be concerned.  The area on the areola is dark and crusty but does not flake off.  I've asked him to get it checked out in the past but he has not done so.  I've noticed he has had this for about a year now.  Is this breast cancer or something else.  there are no lumps in the breast area. He is stubborn and I think maybe he might be embarrassed to go to the doctor because we live in a very small rural community.  I'm trying to get as much info on what it may be and present him with my research.
thank you in advance,
Terri in North Dakota

You can go to breastcancer.org. Click on community support. Join the discussion there and scroll down to the forum that is for men with breast cancer. Maybe they can give you some advice.  Maybe when discussing it with him try using the word skin infection or something other than breast cancer. It is nothing for your husband to be ashamed about. It happens. I wish him well.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Dear Terri1ND:  Skin on the breast is like skin anywhere else on the body and is subject to a variety of abnormalities.  Without evaluation, it is not possible for us to speculate on what this crustiness may be.  Your husband should see his doctor or a dermatologist.
