lump in the left breast

Hello to all.. :)
I am 18 years of age african american female and no children. The other night I found a lump in my left breast while examining and I was puzzled. So I proceeded on to examin the right one and no lump. I went to the hospitial the following day to see if there was anything wrong and what I can do. The Dr. proceed to give me a breast examination and confirmed what I found, I did have a lump in my left breast. He told me I had to go to a breast doctor to get examined there and then they can figure out what they needed to do. As you can imagine Im freaking out and depressed (a little :( ). While I was in the doctors office he did ask me did I have any breast cancer history in my family. My mother confirmed that I do indeed but not on my father's side. I need more info or someone to assure me that Im not alone.

Thanks for taking the time out to read this. :)

PS- I was reading some of the other posting's similar to my condition and I came along coffee intake. I do drink coffee but not alot only sometimes like the lattes and dunkin donuts is that why i found the lump?

My 13 year old daughter found a lump in her breast.  Since I was diagnosed with BC in 2004, we were very concerned.  My surgeon referred us to a specialist at a children's hospital.

My daughter was given an ultrasound.  It turned out to be a benign fluid-filled lump referred to as "Fibroadenoma".  I was told that it's pretty common during adolescent years. The doctor said that it should subside with time but in the interim, have it check about every 6-8 months.

I'm glad that your outcome was good.  Be blessed!

Dear lala42:  It is not uncommon to have a lump.  Most of these turn out to be benign.  Breast cancer is not common in 18 year olds.  However, any time there is a new lump, it requires further evaluation to determine what it is.  Coffee (caffeine, actually) is said to contribute to fibrous breast changes but it is too soon to assume that this lump is due to a fibrous change.
