masectomy or lumpectomy

Three lumps have been found in my left breast, all of which have been biopsied and one has come back positive with IDC. THe other two are also positive, but still being evaluated as to what kind of cancer and so forth. The largest mass in 1 cm. with margins undetermined. Lymph nodes have not been checked yet. My doctor is recommending a masectomy of the left side, with out chemo or radiation. I asked why he couldn't do 3 lumpectomies and give me radiation and chemo so I can keep my breast. I am large enough to spare.

Dear Lydia676:  Multifocal breast cancer presents unique challenges in terms of management that do not lend themselves well to lumpectomies in most cases.  You might benefit from a frank discussion with a breast surgeon or even get a second opinion so that this may be explained to you in the context of your situation.

How do I know if I have multifocal or multicentric? From the few studies I've read a lumpectomy outcome is almost the same as masectomy
