The bible does speak of eternal burning, however you have to take the entire Bible to really understand what it means when it "seems" to be saying that. First off, think about it. The Bible over and over again says that the wicked will be "destroyed" or "perish" (John 3:16). So if they burned forever we have a problem already because they would not "perish" or be "destroyed" if they did.
A few verses to show that the wicked will not burn forever:
1. Jude 7 which says, "Even as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities about them in like manner giving themselves over to fornication and going after strange flesh are set forth an exaple suffering the vengence of ETERNAL FIRE.
These cities were DESTROYED by God as an example of eternal fire. So are they still burning? No, they were destroyed by God and when the fire had done it's work it went out. The punishment was eternal but the PUNISHING was not.
2. Mal. 4:1-3 tells us what will happen when the fires of hell will burn: "For behold the day cometh that SHALL BURN AS AN OVEN AND ALL THE PROUD AND YEA AND ALL THE WICKED SHALL BE STUBBLE. and the day that cometh SHALL BURN THEM UP saith the Lord of hosts that is shall leave them NEITHER ROOT NOR BRANCH.
vs 3. "And ye shall tread down the wicked for they shall be ASHES THE SOLES OF YOUR FEET in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts.
If they are ashes under our feet they are not burnign, if they are left neither root nor branch they are not still burning, if they are stubble they are not still burning.
Job 20:6-8 Though the pride of the godless reaches to the heaves and their heads touch the clouds, yet they vanish forever, thrown away like their own dung. Thos who knew them will ask, where are they?

The above mentioned links are just a few that give views on what hell is and passages in the bible that mention hell, lake of fire, damnation, etc.
I believe we each must wrestle or come to terms with what we believe and how we will live in regards to what we believe. It is good you are posting this and asking tough questions.
The Bible tells us that the Lake of Fire was created for the Devil, and his demons. It was not created for man, (unless you look at it another way, If I am an adopted jew because I believe in christ, then does that make people who follow satan (adopted demons). I think the answer depends on whether you believe the soul is immortal or not and if it can be killed.
Revelation 20:10, "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, , and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."
Revelation 20:12-15, "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God;... and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell (hades-grave) delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell (hades-grave) were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
The above scripture would lead one to assume that unless the human body is immortal, this would be a second death. (a permanant one as only God can kill the soul?
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death". (Revelation 2:11) (NIV)
I believe all who are not saved from hell, will experience a permanant death by burning in the lake of fire. The bible does not promise those a permanant afterlife. IMO
