3 1/2 year old child

My daughter occassionally lies about a toy or an item behind her back or whether or not she took something. My husband has been disciplining our daughter by telling her she is "lying" and getting mad. I don't believe she has the concept of what a lie is yet, but he says I am wrong and if he says the word "lying" enough when he disciplines her that she will get the correlation. What do 3 1/2 year old children understand regarding lying at this age? What is the best way to approach this problem? My daughter thinks it's a game and laughs, which makes him madder, This has created a rift between my husband and I. Thanks for the help. san diego mom

She's just having fun.  This is the age of story telling also.  My 4 year old comes up with the funniest stories.  Sometimes we almost believe her, but then we realize it's just another story.  We laugh about it.  She's our little story teller.

It is normal for a child to lie yes your right she is 3 1/2 she doesnt know what lying is this is when you need to teach her that she is lying and it is not appropriate. If the child is playing and thinks it is a game then how would she know that it is lying.
