Scab picker

Yes, I am one, and increasingly so. I even try to pick one on my kids! They won't let me, thank G... I was reading previously about cutting and scab piking was the mildest form of it. When picking draws blood, it increase what, I believe adrenaline, which would help a depressive, if I understand correctly. I LOVE picking scabs. Not sure if I REALLY want to stop. Poison Oak has been my provider! On the other hand, my legs and arms look UGLY, sickly, etc... I realize the picking comes and goes with my emotions. So, picking scabs, I conclude, is only a by-product of deeper things.
Enjoy, you know what.

ANXIETY it is and it is completely conscious. Having an ex suing for partition in order to walk off with the money of my home 'cause as he is off to greener pastures, nearing 60 with the kids going off into their lives, etc ... no sufficient cash flow for doctors or psychologist ... well you get the picture. I do run anxiety attacks on occasion and have meds for it. I believe that when the dust settles, so will my picking, well at least most of it, I trust.

As to my kids, they are 17 and 20, so not so easily influenced any more; at least their early years were more secure, mostly 'cause I was.

Thank you for your responses.

it sounds very much like anxiety, and picking scabs relieve anxiety.  however i have a 10 year old who has only just received dermatology treatment for chronic scab picking, this seemingly harmless (in early years) behaviour has left him scarred all over his body.  at his worst he could have 40 open sores at any one time on his face, arms, legs, buttocks, feet.  it is probably not a good example to your children to deal with emotional difficulties this way.  you should talk to your doctor and try to pin down your feelings of anxiety and find a better way to deal with what ever it is your subconcious mind is trying to tell you.  good luck.

Scab picking can be a sign of an anxiety disorder or other mental health issue.  I suspect you are correct when you say that "picking scabs ... is only a by-product of deeper things".  Perhaps it is time to see your family doctor and ask for a referral to a specialist whom he/she feels might be able to help you.  I wish you the best ...
