19 Month Hits Himself

Hi
My 19 month old son has started to hit himself when we are riding in the car. It has happened on the way home from school. He gets very upset and starts to hit himself. I usally rush home so I can get him out of the car and he is usally fine after that. He is not very verbal yet so I don't know if he is mad cause he can speak, or if he is mad cause the school day is over. Oh yes usally instead of crying when I leave him at school he cries when I come to get him.
I don't know where he learned such a thing.
I just don't know what to do or say to help him.

Could he have seen some other child do this? Perhaps as you are in the car a music tape turned up loud is a distraction, or singing loudly ,does he do it at home or only when you pick him up.?Is there something  on the car seat he does not like, something is triggering it try to figure it out he wont be doing it for nothing.
