spiro test

has anyone on here had a tempory trachea, where they cut a hole in your neck and insert a tube connecected to a breathing machine, i had one for about three weeks, could not talk while it was in, but could speak immediatley after they took it out,its horrible when they try to get the phlegm up with it.i find that when i have a spiro test i can't blow for long enough as it starts to sort of tickle in my throat when i am blowing so can't get a full assessment, it seems they think i have a lower reading than should be, but i feel i am not getting a true flow reading, because of this irritant,

If you are unable to blow long enough to expel the maximum possible air or unable to blow forcefully without the tickle causing cough and preventing high flow expiration, the results of a spirometric test will not give an accurate measure of your actual lung function.  In most institutions, spirometry is interpreted by a lung specialist.  That person should be advised of your problem with the tickle before rendering an interpretation.

The persistence of a tickle after prolonged intubation for 3 weeks is not uncommon.  The tickle will eventually resolve spontaneously in most cases.  If it does not, or if your breathing feels impaired, you should have a direct examination of your trachea, by a lung specialist, using a fiberoptic bronchoscope, to determine if the tube in your trachea has caused chronic ulceration and/or stricture of the trachea.
