Mental Confusion

My 46 year old son was diagnosed with cirrhosis in September.  He went through outpatient rehab and seemed fine until a week ago.  His belly is distended and he is slurring and forgetting things.  He swears he is not drinking.  Could his liver be failing?

The distended abdominal sounds like ascities and the slurring speech could be hepatic encephalopathy.

He needs to be under the care of a hepatologist to evaluate his symptoms. Best of luck to you both.

If he really isn't drinking, those ate not good signs. Unexpected things can happen when you have cirrhosis. It's time for a Doppler ultrasound or a CT scan, don't you think?

Cheers,
Mike.
