Can you lose weight with 20-25% EF with dilated idiopathic cardiomyopathy?

57 year old female diagnosed with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy...I weigh 225 pounds.  Have 20 to 25% LVEF and take lithium  450mg daily along with lamictal 200mg a day for bi-polar diagnosis since 1973. How do I lose weight with this situation...psych drugs are mandatory for mental health stability, even though they retain fluid in my body. I would like to know realisticlly how to lose weight or is it even a possiblity given the circumstances mentioned.  If it is able to be accomplished...how do I lose the weight, what do you suggest?

Hello Connie!  I am so thankful to hear from someone who has travelled this journey already...I am feeling right now like Dorothy, in the Wizard of Oz..."lions, and tigers, and bears...OH MY!"  It's good to "bare" my feelings to someone who has been on this path before me.  I will be going soon to see my cardiologist...I did not get to hear his thots after the catherization...he must have had a busy schedule in surgery that day.  I do know, however...I am in a serious situation with this ejection fraction being as low as it is.  I have so much to ask the doctor, I don't know where to begin.  I am having a real hard time swallowing my diagnosis.  The more I read off of the internet on the subject matter...the more I wonder how long I have with my loved ones.  I'm not afraid to die, just didn't see the Lord having me get ready so soon!  Thanks again Connie, for your love, and encouragement...the Lord Bless you and your family.  kathy

Hi cliveandkathy!

You have taken a major step toward improving your overall health...YEAH!!  It sounds like you are ready to move forward into some type of health program that will lead you to a healthier you.  Because you have a compromised EF, it is really important to discuss your plan with your cardiologist.  The doctor is likely to recommend watching fluid intake, sodium intake, calorie intake and manageable exercises.  Any chance you could get into a rehab program through your doctor?  Those programs are great because you are in a monitored situation with lots of support.  If that is not an option, try to find someone (or a group) who will be there to encourage you, and you will do the same for them.  You're on your way!!

My father had a EF of 24% and the doctor always encourages any walking or exercise he can tolerate.  Also, he has been told to watch his diet.  So, chances are your doctor will give you similar advice and help you toward your goal!  Best of luck and health to you!
