Defribrillator replacement

My husband had a quad by-pass six years ago after a v-tach episode, heart cath, eco cardiogram, etc. Only complication was lung collapsed while in hosp but they inflated it again (not sure of proper term).   They placed a defibrillator/pacemaker in before he left the hosp.  It has been six years and it needs replaced due to a low battery --leads do not need replaced.  The unit has not had to shockor pace since implanted which is good.  His diagnosis is congestiveheart failure, 35-40  E F fraction(sp?) but has felt good since the by-pass; also has diabetes but under control with meds (no need for insulin shots).
Questions are: how dangerous is the replacement surgery?   what is the recovery like?  restrictions?  should I plan to be off work longer than the day of the replacement to stay home with him?  Thank you

If no leads need ro be replaced, surgery should be minor and recovery quick. Restrictions are more for the leads.  Ask doctor, but he should be fine at home. Please look at icdsupportgroup.com for lots of helpful people with answees about pacemakers, defibrillators, CHF.....take care, annette
