heart versus obesity

My mother 58 years old was very slim at her youth. In recent years she became very obese. Being not a doctor, yet i suspected problems with her heart or some water retention.i.e. kidney issues. A few weeks ago she traveled to Europe and caught pneumonia due to hard weather conditions. But that was not a curse since coming back we did x-rays and she got rid of the effusion in lungs and is recovering. Yet the x-rays showed the leftlobe bigger meaning some swelling in the heart. So we did echo on the heart and discovered she has a regerge due to a weaker mitral valve the doctors decided she must have had during childhood rheumatic fever which she denied. Anyway, my question what forum i would better address my questions concerning these types of questions especially that i am worried about her obesity which is bursting. I am sure this is related to the heart issues but i can't tell how, i.e. can't tell the connection. I don't see her eating much. her doc is giving her lasix pills though. But i need to know whether there is a connection between the heart and obesity because i am sure it's some kind of water retention. Her kidney's functions are normal though according to tests. Also the thyroid is ok.

thank you for both of you.
It seems as some physician told me a sluggish blood circulation due to a weak heart yields obesity because although the kidney functions but it doesn't extract well the urine. She takes duretics anyway
many thanks

If you are asking can a person be obese from fat and water yes this can be so.
Here in hospital they removed with IV diuretics a combination of 2 meds 10 kg which is 23 lbs of water from me in 2.5 days time. Cardiologistst decided for this since pills diuretics were not enough to get this done.

Hi,

There’s no connection between the heart and obesity. Heart disease can result in swelling of the feet and later on generalized swelling. This swelling is different from the fatty swelling of the obesity. Since the renal and thyroid functions are normal, these organs can’t be attributed to cause the obesity/swelling, as hypothyroidisim is known to cause generalized swelling.

I don’t there’s a specific forum for obesity but I’ll suggest the “exercise & fitness” forum. Please consult your physician to rule out the possibility of the Congestive heart failure as a cause of generalized swelling. I don’t think mitral regurgitation can cause generalized swelling before causing breathlessness and thus I won’t attribute the obesity to the underlying heart disease.

Regards and do keep me posted.
