Dental Councel after dignose of Oral Cancer

It's a long story, too long, so I'll keep it short. in 1992 my mother who never smoked or drank in her life was diagnosed with genetic Oral Cancer. "Needless to say, she didn't make it."
She was only 55.

But this is the problem, and I'm not sure how the dental community handles this. Rather than being ready, willing and able to come in for any kind of dental screening, not just myself, but the entire family, (Close knit, family extended tree- back paddle).

Everyone is afraid to visist a dentist/ oral surgeon, whatever.
Couseling, I know is...... to be sought by individual families,
but in this cse it isn't working.

What steps would a dentist take to reassure members of , at least my family take to encourage at least one yearly exam?

I agree with the dr. no one can encourage you to go to the dr. Early detection is the key!! Do you go to a dentist regularly? He should be doing a cancer screening any way. Ask them if you go to one if they have seen anything suspicious. If you are 100% satisfied with his response them just continue to remind him to be agressive with anything he may see that is suspicious in the least bit. If you are not satisfied with what he has to say and your gut reaction is not settled then GO HAVE A SECOND OPINION!!!! Maybe an oral surgeon? As far as your family you can only encourage and share your experience with them in hopes that they will follow suit!! Good luck!!

Hi there, could you just clarify if your family is afraid to visit the dentist generally, or just in relation to oral cancer screening? Thanks!

I am afraid that the dental community doesn't have the power to convenience your family to visit them. early detection for any cancer goes a long way in its sucessful treatment. I am sure your family is intelligent enough to realize that. I am sure when your family would visit the dentist and your history was explained that the dentist would be understanding and supportive.
