Excruciating pain, exasperating dentist

I had a filling come out of the upper left farthest back tooth about 3.5 years ago and it did not hurt at all until my dentist fixed and refilled the tooth.  Immediately as the numbing was wearing off I felt an excruciating pain unlike no other.  My dentist said I had a sinus infection and prescribed antibiotics and tylenol 3.  The pain was acute and chronic and has lasted these past 3.5 years at times excruciating and at times low grade and always extremely sensitive to hot cold and lately  even to lukewarm water.  Recently it has become excruciating again and he has given me antibiotics again.  Throughout the last  3.5 years it has overall  been medium grade to excruciating pain every day and i have taken at least 5 - 10 ibuprofens, tylenol, etc practically every day/night for the past 3.5 years.  I can't get him to fix this tooth so that it wont hurt.  I grind my teeth on that side and the pain often wakes me up.  This time the tylenol 3 isn't working. when i feel the tooth with my tongue it feels like there is a space between the filling and under the tooth or something strange compared to the other fillings.  I am really starting to get angry at this dentist  and i know all these pills are unhealthy.   He always shows me the xray and says it is sinus infection but this tooth never hurt me at all until HE WORKED ON It and the teeth on the other side never hurt. Granted, right now it feels like more than one on that side hurts which is not the norm (prob because of the sinus infection which i know i have) but this one particular tooth always hurting -Please HELP!

Get a new dentist, get checked out by an endodontist & neurologist!    I had similar situation.   You'll also find that no one wants to tell you what the xrays say when there's a screw up, and some will even turn you down to help if they don't want involved.   But there are doctors out there that are professional & tell u the problem & do the job w/o trashing the colleague that did the work.     I have found that the specialist have a better trained eye.

find another dentist...yesterday. my sister had pain and symptoms almost identical to yours(pain up into her nasal cavity, etc) and she needed a root canal.your dentist sounds like an egotistical jerk. the fact that he has not discussed a root canal with you is rather strange, as that is exactly what needed to be done to alleviate my sister's pain, although SHE was the one who thought she had  some odd sinus problem. it definitely sounds like your first step to relief is another dentist. best of luck. mia

3.5 years is way too long to go in pain.  You should get another opinion.  It sounds like you may need a root canal.
