Gum pain and swelling after injection

Hello and thank you for your time. I went to my dentist on Wednesday morning to have a filling put in. When he injected me, it was the worse injection I have ever had and I am 53. I almost told him to stop because I was about to pass out from the pain. The filling went fine even though the side of my face was in pain the entire time. It is now Friday and their office is closed but I still have gum pain and a swollen spot on my gum about the size of a peanut that feels shiny with my tongue and still have almost severe pain. Could the dentist have hit a nerve or something? I just want the swelling to go down and maybe the pain will subside. I have used narcotic pain killers with no help but I have used ice packs on the outside of my cheek which seems to help. I have also used Lyrica that I had for nerve damage and it has helped also. Do you have any thoughts? Thank you very much for your time.

That is somewhat unusual.  Usually those injections are relatively easy and heal well.  Have you talked to your dentist at all about it?

I would contact your dentist and let him/her know.  If not, you may want to see your primary care physician or whomever he may recommend as a referral.

Hello and thank you. It was tooth number 3. It was the 1st injection into my gum on the cheek side. Immediate pain in my gum, cheek and a very bad headache. It has been almost a week and the swelling has went down some in my cheek and a little on my gum. It still hurts bad around the gum and I still have a very bad headache. The only thing that will bring the pain down some is an ice pack and Lyrica. I can fill my mouth with any temperature liquid and hold it against the gum and the pain will go away for a few seconds. I am 53 and have had countless injections into my gums and this is the 1st time this has happened. Any ideas? Thank you very much for your time.

How many injections was it?  Where did he deliver the injection?  Which tooth was he working on?
