Pain After Molar Onlay

I never had any pain or sensitivity on this tooth in my life. I am taking the doctors word that it needs to be worked on. $900 later I am experiencing the following:

I came in on 1/11/2010 to get my bottom right 1st tooth prepped for the onlay.

While putting on the temporary only the dental assistant put in the wrong type and it had hardened in the hollow of the tooth.

Another assistant came running in and told her it was the wrong one and immediately started extracting the incorrect temporary. The experience that followed was very brutal on my tooth (yanking, pulling, and breaking the incorrect temporary out of the tooth).

The second assistant put the correct temporary on and I left the office. I was in such pain that when I got home I put on an icepack and slept for 13 hours. I have continued feeling intense (and worsening) pain since that day.

On 1/26/2010 I came in to get the permanent onlay. Still in pain from the prep work done on 1/11/2010.

To make matters worse, the Novocain shot had to be administered two times because I was still sensitive and feeling everything. I still was in pain when I left.

On 2/10/2010 I came back in with complaints that I was still in pain on the bottom right when I bit down, if anything touched the tooth, and hot and cold.

My x-rays were taken of the bottom right but never even referenced during the work that followed.

The Dr. said that the onlay was too high and that it needed to be filed down. The tooth directly above it was also filed down.

Although this allowed me to now bite down fully, I still experienced severe pain if anything touches the tooth and to hot and cold.

An assistant then put some desensitizer and a piece of cotton on the tooth. The dry cotton on the tooth was extremely painful, the Dr. then filed the tooth down some more and I was told to come back if I was still in pain.

I emailed the office for an appointment with this breakdown attached. Worried that I will be in pain forever. Any advice?

Depending on the depth of the prep done, its possible that you may need a root canal on the tooth.  If the cavity (I'm assuming that's the reason for the onlay) was deep, there's a possibility that the nerve is either infected or the trauma from the drilling has caused a pulpal degeneration of the tooth resulting in pain/discomfort.

Yes, sometimes if the restorative work is high, it can also cause discomfort and pain due to excessive trauma and force on a tooth when chewing.  Has the symptoms improved at all since it was filed down?  You may need to be referred to an endodontist (root canal specialist) for a second opinion on the tooth.

You may want to discuss the specifics of your case with your dentist.  Its ideal to at least air out your concerns and talk about a possible resolution with your dentist.  If that isn't possible, then you can go forward and file a complaint.  You may also want to get your case reviewed by a professional review board of dentist.  If your discussion with him isn't successful, let me know and I can give you more detailed information. I believe you can find your options on the ADA website as well.

The pain is still there and getting worse (now my jaw is hurting).

Since I left the office on the day of the prep work I was not able to even let air touch the tooth even less bite down on it. I didn't even try to bite down so it's not like I forced any pressure on the tooth.

I never had pain or sensitivity until they worked on the tooth so was not a preexisting condition.

What does a dentist do when an assistant make a mistake that could possibly have caused a patient to now have to get a root canal and/or new crown/onlay on a tooth that just needed a simple onlay. Will I be on the hook for their mistake. They have a sign that says they guarantee their work.

They also over billed me $300 thank goodness I called the insurance and told them the amount I paid. I am worried I got scammed by bad dentists. (not my first time getting scammed by a dentist....well they tried to scam my insurance co)
