Dry Socket - or ordinary pain.

I had my very last bottom Molar extracted on Tuesday - it is now Friday.

I had cracked it in half eating popcorn, I was put on antibiotics a few weeks before the extraction as the xray showed some infection.

The tooth came out, but had to cut in pieces to come out, root was curved deep.

I am having intense throbbing pain, I can't turn my head upside down to wash my hair even because it hurts so bad.

The dentist put in a few stitches to help close the wound, I can see the packing, it is white/yellow, and there is a slight odor.

Is this something I can fix at home, or do I need to go back - Ibruprophen 400's seem to help slightly with the pain, but not for long. I don't want to be a pain and head back if I don't have to. If I know it'll end soon I can wait it out.

I have seen videos for cleaning out and replacing the packing on the tooth, but mine is stitched in ...

Please help.

Thanks,
Wendy

If the socket is exposed, you should go back to your dentist to get the socket packed with dry socket paste.  You may need to return multiple times to get the socket repacked.

for what's its worth, i had similar simptoms and it was dry socket, i came for my dentist 3 days in a row and she put some medicine on the area and it helped from the first minute.

I also had some food debris in the area, and this might be the cause of the smell, food get in between the stitches and you might not be able to see it.

There was no food debris, the whole was packed and stitched over ...

I was hoping to get an answer about the pain being typical or signs of a dry socket. Everything has since come out, and I can stare directly into the root holes left behind.

I am going to get cotton and some clove oil today to put back in, I can't talk or eat...

Try to gently rinse the area out to remove the food debris.  Also, call your dentist to see if you can get a strong prescription for pain that's safe for you to take.
