Tooth Pain

I have not been to a dentist for about 15 years and I finally decided to get my teeth cleaned, not because my tooth was hurting.  The new dentist told me that I had cavities where my old fillers where and wanted to fix it, so I said go ahead even though my tooth was not hurting.  Ever since he has put the new filler in, my tooth has been in pain to the point where I have not been able to chew on it for 2 years. I was afraid to go back to the other dentist and  went with my old childhood dentist to take a look at it and she said  my tooth was alittle cracked from it being filled to much and that I should have a crown put on.  Since this temporarily crown that has been in for about 5 days, it still has not helped with the pain I'm still feeling.  When the food touches it or just biting down on that tooth it hurts.  I just don't know what to do next.  I am to go back in about 3 weeks to put the permanent crown on.

My question is could I still get cavities from my old filler even though I was not feeling any pain in my tooth and why am I still feeling pain after the old filler has been replaced with the new?  Do you have any suggestions what I should do and what kind of questions I should be asking my present dentist?  Thank you for your time.

The possible source of pain is occlusal interference or pulpitis. Asking your dentist to adjust occlusion is advised. If you still feel pain after occlusal adjustment, evaluation of pulp is indicated.

well------what they are going to try and do is, grind down your tooth(very close to  the gum line)......make a big hole and do a root canal.....then fill it back in or put on a crown ...........i'll warn you ,sometimes the procedure doesn't work!.......start with a root canal.....if that does not work then pull out the tooth and get a bridge done....
