prolonged pain in wisdom tooth sight after extraction

i had my 3 wisdom teeth extracted only one was impacted and lying down, he removed it and 4 weeks now I am having soreness and pain in that sight.  It did get a dry socket but the healing is good but still likes a little filling in but the pain is so annoying.
I am on antibiotics in case there is an infection.
He did have me rinsing once a day with scope(using a syring) in the area.   I stopped that because I think it may have been irritating it but could it have prolonged my healing?
Oh and I am 40 years old and that may be a factor also.

Well, the more complicated and involved the extraction, the more time it'll take for the area to heal and the more discomfort you'll experience.  Taking the pain medication is fine for the short term to deal with pain for most people.  You may want to ask your doctor if its okay for you as well but I imagine for any normal healthy person, its fine.

they did tell me that the sight was very deep and large so I wasn't sure if I was just being overly sensitive or was this about normal for my age? I am on Advil every 4 hours and it helps.  I really don't like pain meds so I am trying to just do that.

You can try rinsing it out with warm salt water instead to keep the area clean.    It may be that the surgical site for the extraction was large in order to get the tooth out so it may take more time for the area to close and heal up.  Normally the gums have to grow and cover up the site before the bone can fill in.  Keep the area clean and let it heal.  Also, some pain medication may help with the discomfort.
