pain after root canal

A week ago I went to the dentist b/c I had a broken tooth I think # 30 and it had been broken for awhile but never bothered me until now. My face swelled slightly I had extreme throbbing pain from my tooth to my ear.I called the dentist and made appt for next day and he prescribe me clindamycin 150mg and hydrocodone for pain. The dentist told me that it was infected and I needed a root canal by speacialist but he cleaned it out and placed a temp filling on it. Once the novacain wore off I was in more pain then before. I suffered through the night and the next day call him and went back in. He opened the filling. When the novacain wore off I felt much better.Three days ago I went and had the root canal done by the speacialist and I am in the WORST PAIN EVER My pain is constant he told me I would be sore for a day or two. This is way more then  sore I can't eat.Sometimes when I talk or eat the tooth will hit and it kills. Then it is sore all the time and throbbing. When I touch the touch with my finger it is painful.I thought that the nerve was gone. Why is it painful? I had hydrocodone left over  from the first visit so I was taking them and motrin 800 and my pain was still there. I am going to call him first thing in the am. But I have had root canals before 5 of them and this never happened. I never even needed to take Motrin with my others. What is wrong with me? I can not live like this for one more day!

My first root canal was Hell! Utter hell. And in reading what you're going through it's almost exactly the pain that I went through. I know this may not help, but sometimes the pain medicine that is prescribed makes the pain worse. Especially Hydrocodone.

While I was serving in the US Air Force during the 60's, I had a root canal done and experienced pain much like yours.  I went back to the dental clinic and was told that the tooth needed to be filed down.  On my third visit, x-rays were taken and I was told that while removing the bad nerves from the tooth, good nerves were damaged.  Another root canal was done, and this time I had no pain or problems.

Good Luck, with your ordeal.
