Lanced but still swollen

My lower left rear abscess appeared overnight, even my dentist said it was "a good size abscess"  so yesterday I had it lanced and drained. I was put on Erithromycin 250mg and per my Dr.'s instruction, took four immediately then one every 6 hours and will finish them by the time of  my root canal appointment in 6 more days. He also prescribed Hydro/apap 7.5-50 for pain. They seem to work ok,  but I hate how they make me feel.  Well, now, 36hrs after lancing and antibiotics, swelling is about 1/2 what it was but seems like it needs more draining to me and a new dull pain has started in my jaw bone that I did not notice till about 12 hours ago. Is this typical and am I concerned for nothing or should I seek out a dentist open on the weekend? Would a cold or hot pack help the swelling/pain? Would some Benadryl help speed the drainage?  Thank you!

Thanks StratRebel.

He wanted to give me something called a a Z-Pack, but I asked if I could stick with Erythromycin because it is very easy on my stomach - so he said it was ok.....and you're right, swelling and pain are both better today.

Thanks again!

Several drugs have loading doses (taking 2-4 immediately), Erythromycin is not one of them.  Also, not sure why he went with the lowest dose possible, Erythromycin is taken in doses of 250-500, and with infections we typically prescribe the highest dose possible in order to kill the infection without causing resistance.

As long as the swelling is getting smaller, you are fine.  36 hours is still short when it comes to antibiotics, you should expect the largest results around day 3-4.  A hot pack will help with the swelling.  The dull pain is normal.  Benadryl will not help.
