St. John's Wort can work for mild to moderate depression. it is by no means as strong as any medication, but that doesn't mean it might not work better for a particular person. However, the natural approach to treating anything isn't usually to use one remedy. It generally would combine remedies that target different organs of the body with exercise, meditation, therapy, and other lifestyle changes. Seldom will taking one herb solve a complex problem. Might a simple problem, but there's nothing simple about depression. Try reading a book by Hyla Cass, a psychiatrist at UCLA, called Natural Highs. It's a basic overview of what's available, or what was available, and useful dosages. It's a good place to start if you want to go that way. So it may be that St. John's Wort was just one part of what a successful program might be, but as with medication, there are no guarantees. If you're not at the end of your rope and are coping okay, my own suggestion would be to give therapy a really good try before turning to medication. They aren't going anywhere and they don't cure the problem, just make it feel less bad. If you do find an answer in therapy, you've cured it. Good luck.
