Bob_D makes a very good point. It is very unusual for a Doctor to prescribe a triple combo right off the bat like that. Prozac, Wellbutrin XL and Effexor can be taken as a triple combo.....BUT, If your boyfriend is new to taking antidepressant medication, then I can absolutly see why he is having such bizzar side effects.
I also take three different AD medications for my severe depression, but I have had these medications added over a 10 year period, because my condition is very severe and needs to be hit from many different areas. If I was to have a triple combo prescribed from the start then I would have also suffered horrible side effects.
This being the case I have to call shananagins on that Doctor for prescribing such a powerful combo to your boyfriend all at once.
Is this combo safe? Yes. Is it advisable for a patient that is new to taking Psycotropic medications... NO WAY.
Is this Doctor a Board Certified Psychiatrist? If not then I can see why this happened. General doctors have no business prescribing AD medications. They simply do not have the training or experience to treat mental illness. Shame on them for even trying.
Get your boyfriend a second oppinion from a real Psychiatrist, not a regular doctor.
I am not a doctor, just a person who has had depression for quite a long time.
I have been taking Prozac, Wellbutrin and another medication for some months with no ill effects. Prozac and Wellbutrin are thought to act on different neurotransmitters.
However, in my experience, antidepressants are introduced one at a time.
I've never heard of adding three at a time and I wouldn't choose such a course of action for myself.
