Isn't the regular drug and the generic the same thing, other than some "fillers" or something like that? You should ask your pharmacist for advice about that so you know all the possible effects of each, just to help you identify the effects you are dealing with as you try each.

If the headaches are gone with the Brand name, then I agree with turbo to stick with the Brand name.

I switched back, no more heaches..just very tired.....Ive been down for awhile, the dr doesnt know what to do with me anymore...its disheartening to here him say that, I need the low dose of effexor to function, but im just functioning a little, just enough to get by..im such a mess...Funny thing with the effexor xr, if i take it at night it keeps me up, if i take it in the morning it makes me sleepy, so i suauly take it at 3pm, thats how i tolereated it before, it used to work well, i would work my waitressing job 35 hours a week go to school fulltime, had a bf went out with friends, now i can barely do  my part time 4 hour job....***** you know...been on the effexor about 6 weeks now...

Hello Again,

At least it seems that you are no longer having headaches, is this true?  Sorry to hear you are feeling tired though.  Was this feeling normal during the course of treatment with the Brand name Effexor?  After hearing the experience you had with the generic, I would say it would be a good idea to not take those any more.  I hope you have already made that decision, though.

The couple of days that you took the generic could have thrown a curve ball in to your depression treatment.  The ups and downs you are experiencing may be the result of the chemical changes that have taken place with the med switch.  Effexor is one of those drugs that needs time to reach its 'operating level' in your body.  Be patient, and don't switch back to the generics.  Since you were only off of it for a couple days, and it seems like you are on a low dose, I would give it a week or so and see if you feel better.  If you find that you are still feeling down, then you should talk this over with your Dr.  If your only problem is sleepiness from the Effexor, you may consider taking it at night, however it is usually advised that it be taken in the morning with food as it usually causes most people to stay awake at night.

Hope this helps and good luck again!

It may well just be coincidence that you had a good day on the day you switched back to your original medication.  I'd advise that you need to give the generic a bit longer to be able to see whether or not it will make a difference to you.

It can be quite common to experience odd good days on your road to recovery and you need to try not to expect too much all in one go.  I know it's difficult because when you have that rare good day you hope like mad that it's the end of the depression.  You will find that over time your one day will become 2 and then 3 and so on.  You could even go weeks of feeling well and then have a sudden slip back.  This is all normal and part of the process.

Try and take the good days as they come and enjoy them, don't let thoughts of a subsequent low spoil them.  On the days when you are feeling low remind yourself that you have had previous good days and that you will have another one.
