Should I try Prozac / Wellbutrin for short term depression?

I have been depressed for the last 3 weeks mostly because I ended a over 4 year relationship as well my financial situation. I want to move on but it seems like every time I think about it I start feeling depressed and anxious. I have had anxiety problems for years but I refuse to depend on medication for something that I might learn to control one day.

I hate to take medication that I can't get off of, so I was thinking of trying Prozac for a couple of months? Any ideas to help me deal with this?

You think if I take it for about 2 - 3 months and then stop I'll get a "rebound" depression or/and anxiety?

I did take Prozac about 3 years ago for panic attacks and I never had one until lately... I guess I will try it out. Thanks!

I'm a big fan of Prozac.  It actually cured me of OCD & racing thoughts.  Maybe I should be their spokesperson????  Each person is different though.   Good luck Mark.  Hope you find something that works well with your body chemistry.

Hi, thanks for all the answers.

I was thinking of trying one or the other, not both at the same time. I will try some of your advices and wait to see if I feel better.

Thanks again for your time.

Not so sure it's a good idea to take 2 different anti-depressants since they can counter each other.  If you're having trouble getting a good nights sleep, try ambien.  Hope you feel better soon.

well i would say more wellbutrin because of less negative side effects, or lexapro for quick onset. Prozac can take some time to build and start working, wellburtin and lexapro start in about a week, and are not as hard to quit.

it is natural to be depressed when  a relationship ends but that doesnt mean you are clinically depressed. meds are for long term depression.
there are several other things you can do like taking a brisk walk for at least 30 minute. eat right and get regular rest. The waling will raise your seritonin level and help you feel better.  take up a hobby that will keep you busy. go ahead and grieve for the lost relationship. it is like something has died and you need to give yourself time to grieve. Hang in there and let me know how you are.
