Prozac causing suicidal thoughts

Hi I have anxiety disorder for like 5 years now. A psychiatrist prescribed me on Prozac among other meds but recently liek a month ago I stopped taking the Prozac because I was having some problems with my medicine providers and stuff since I turned 21 and wouldn't take me in their anymore. So I thought I wasn't getting meds anymore so I just stopped taking the Prozac. Now I am really anxious and having anxiety attacks and thinking (I know this will sound weird) what if I become suicidal and get scared but I dont want to commit suicide or anything just the thought of me becoming suicidal is really scary. So I was wondering if I start taking the Prozac again will it make me suicidal even tho when I took it I didn't feel suicidal but the fear of Prozac causing suicidal thoughts scares me and I don't know if I should start taking it again fearing that it causes suicidal thoughts even tho it didn't on the 4 or 5 years I took it. Whats your opinion?

I believe the poster is speaking of Prozac, not Paxil.  Any antidepressant can cause suicidal thoughts -- it's right on the label, as required by the FDA, on all of them.  Paxil is no worse or better than the others on this point.  While I agree that Paxil is a most difficult drug that should only be taken as a last resort, I wouldn't recommend you telling anyone to stop it abruptly -- it's the hardest of all these drugs to stop taking.

Hi there,

Before stopping any medication, we urge you to contact your medical professional.  Stopping some medications cold turkey can be dangerous.

Best wishes to you,

Steph

Hi. I am new to MH and am checking out the different groups and i saw the  Paxil question. I have to respond and will be very short. I think your sub-conscious or your body or your mind or maybe your intuition is telling you to stop the Paxil and not necessarily other meds. My wife tried Paxil for a while and had horrible experiences with it including suicidal thoughts and she had never had that before---depression but no suicide ideation. So i think avoid it and i consider it a very dangerous drug as many do. Hope that helps you.

This only happens on occasion, and it didn't happen to you.  It happens more often to the very young.  But since you know it can happen, if it does, you'll know it's the drug and can taper off it.  The biggest problem with meds is what the doctor doesn't tell you, but you do know so you're prepared.  But you don't mention ever doing therapy to fix this -- drugs won't fix it, just make it feel better.  Are you in therapy?
