Zoloft increase and anxiety/derpession

Hi.  I had sinus surgery on December 14th, 2006 (about 2.5 weeks ago) for a deviated septum.  Upon coming out of my "fog" it appears as though my 50 mg Zoloft dose had stopped working completely.  I began taking 50 mgs in August 2006 and saw immediate, miraculous results.  I work as a counselor in a residential substance abuse facility and having begun this type of work (stressful); my first "real" job (I'm 28), finishing a Masters program, and taking on a long distance relationship (I'm in Alabama, she's in DC) and was given Zoloft to take the edge off.  I battled for six-seven months before (March 2006-August 2006) not willing to take meds but upon failing with Paxil in June/July, I agreed to take Zoloft and did GREAT!  The stress was alleviated, I felt like I was making a difference in my profession, the relationship was working out, etc.

Now, two weeks after surgery I'm on my third day of 100 mg Zoloft (the doctor increased it upon hearing of my sympotms) and am not getting much relief.  My question is: How long should I wait before requesting to switch to another med or wait this period out?  If meds hadn't done WONDERS for me from August-two weeks ago I wouldn't bother.  I'm just experiencing the same symptoms I had several months ago and it scares the hell out of me to think I could return to such state.  Thanks for you help!

You could also be taking too much zoloft. your doc needs to play arould with it. I too needed zoloft, but i was severely depressed. My doc put me on 25. no help. then 50, and I did great. but then he put me up to 100 and I started getting a little weird... dizzy, and unstable feeling like my mind was foggy, and he put me back to 50. but now, I am having the same symptoms. I dont know if i need upped of lowered. it could be either one, really, you never know for sure because it feels the same. events in ones life change chemical balances every day. to put it simple, a human will never stay at the same level of stability for long. you can get better or you can get worse. there is no in between here. hope I helped

if your 50mg dose of zoloft was working, then go back to it.  Medical issues, such as having surgery, etc can have an affect on your mood.  I think it was irresponsible of you doctor to quickly up the dosage before giving your body time to recover after surgery.  mind and body are very connected and the increase in your symptoms could have very well been from the stress of sugery, etc.  I also commend you for your work in residential...I worked in a residential group home for 3 years while finishing my master's degree in social work.  It can be very stressful, but i'm glad to see you're hanging in there.  If you can handle residential, you can handle just about anything.  I am concerned that your doctor prescirbed you the zoloft to "take the edge off."  don't get me wrong, i'm glad it worked for you.  Personally, i decided to take up yoga to deal with the stress.  If you plan on continuing with residential for your career or work elsewhere in the mental health field, i would reccomend finding additional ways to cope with the stress.  you don't want to depend on zoloft to help you manage with your job.  Best of luck with finishing grad school and your career.  Hang in there.
