chronic depression

I'm between the ages of 13 and 19. I've been blessed with a great family and a good life so far. I don't have too much to complain about. I have a good amount of work to do for a teenager, but nothing too bad. For the past few years though I've had these horrible few-days-long mood swings of great happiness to utteryl low depression. When I'm sad I get paranoid, loos interest in things, feel anxious, and feel as though I have no one that cares for me. I thought this was just part of being a teenager, but I found that my dad is the same way. I hadn't known until recently becuase he wouldn't worry me about something like that, but I found out that he's been that way for 30 to 40 years. Even my grandpa was that way. I'm not sure if I'm just being a negative mope everyone once in a while or if there's a genetic/chronic thing goin on here. Also when I'm in these depressions where I'll be crying and down for several days suddenly the stupidest thing will make me turn around in a few hours. I'll here a song I like, or eat a pop tart or something else along those lines and start brightening up in several hours. I'm not familiar with the different types of chronic depression. Does anyone know what that would be? Also is it COMMON for depression to have major genetic factors? Thanks a ton.

Hey,

I have a similar experience from my younger days.  It seemed that I couldn't bear it at times, so I started a journal, and got my thoughts and feelings out that way.  This was long before the internet where you can find more people that are going through what you are currently feeling.  Just don't forget that you are not alone, and there a lot of young people that are experiencing what you are going through.  Try to write down your feelings from time to time, and post here as well - it really takes away a lot of the burden.  One more thing that I would like to proffer to you - when you are feeling really down, and things seem really tough; go for a walk, or get some exercise.  Your brain will secrete hormones that will make you feel really great.  Good luck to you!  Hang in there, it gets better - I know.
