My story of getting over extreme depression

I have been reading here the stories of people dealing with exactly same feelings of depression, low self-esteem, insecurity and mental pain as I have been dealing with. I want to tell my story so that I can perhaps help others to get over their negative feelings. Reason for your bad feeling can be anything: it can be related to your relationship (cheating, abuse, breakup... etc) or to some other aspect in your life. Here was the cause of my bad feeling and depression: I had been together with my spouse for 5 years, when our relationship suddenly and very unexpectedly ended. I thought my world had come to an end. I truly hit the bottom, I was anxious, depressed, stressed and felt completely hopeless... I found great help from one book, which described ways to get over bad feelings created by problems in a relationship / ending of relationship, or any other crisis in life. The idea introduced in that book was very interesting to me: it described how we can "teach" our brain to think in a different, constructive way during times of crisis, in similar fashion as we can teach our bodies to move in new ways, for example while learning to dance.

When you start to think about it, there are many examples of people being able to control their mind and physiology: people can train themselves to control their heart rate, or block the feelings of pain, etc... why could we not control our brain and also other emotions in addition to pain in same fashion? Instead of being "slaves" to our brain and emotions, we can learn to block negative, unwanted feelings before those feelings will crush us. I can say that book practically saved my life. I did not want to start to use antidepressant for years, instead this more "natural" approach was fascinating to me.

Think about it: what if you could control the way your brain and mind works so effectively, that you could elevate your own mood without help of medication? Wouldn't that be truly wonderful? That book dealt with those topics and gave practical tips and advices as to how to achieve this goal. In the end there is a "Survival package"- section, with tips and instructions of how to live on day-to-day basis first few weeks after emotional crisis.... That really helped me, since I was a total wreck for few weeks.... I just could not function. After reading that book I was able to teach myself how to deal with pain and negative feelings, so that I was able to start a new, balanced life without my spouse. I feel I am now much better equipped against all sorts of tragedies which may come my way in future, I will not be crushed by hurt and pain, I know how to deal with them. I wanted to tell my story because I was so impressed by this completely new approach to handle negative feelings. If you are interested in that book, you can read more about it from here:

By the way that is a pretty nice website, with all sorts of information on related topics, which can also be of interest and helpful for you and others in here who are dealing with difficult situations. Lots of warm hugs and strength to all of you!

Of course it's important to study ways out of depression, but one shouldn't go through it completely alone. I have a book that has been a great support through tougher times and after reading a few chapters I feel a lot better - BUT it doesn't change the fact that my body needs light-therapy and medications over the winter-season.
I believe in a better emotional life, but that is through the involved factors - the complete healing and not only a book alone.
