I can completely understand you having a type of ptsd from that ordeal. I think I developed a sort of ptsd from a year of being hyperthyroid (heart racing, heart palps, shortness of breath, etc). A therapist might be able to give you cognitive behavior therapy to aid in your recovery. As with most health issues though, it will take a while. You have to retrain your brain. I have to as well. If my heart races from a normal activity (running up the stairs) I develop a panic attack. I have to recondition my brain to accept these normal behaviors (I am just so worried because in the last year I have spent many nights in the ER with them not able to bring my heart rate down regardless of the many beta blockers and calming drugs they injected into me). I was a year into my counseling master's degree, but switched to health psychology. I hope things can ease up for you. That would have been a very traumatic experience!
Listen to your doctor, what you went through is very traumatizing! I would see a psychiatrist for an evaluation, not only are they most knowledgable should you need medication they can refer you to the proper therapist to help you deal with this. I can't imagine what you went thru, but I'm sure it's had a lasting effect on you. We all need help at some point, so don't continue to suffer when there is help for this. I'm sorry you had to endure this, and hope you can get some relief quickly. Take care and I wish you all the best.
