itching and wellbutrin

i've been on Wellbutrin for 2 years and have stopped taking it as my depressionm is under control. I slowly went off the medication.  As I was weaning off I noticed I began to itch on my head and then it became worse and now I'm itching all over my body.  i went to the dermatologist and they gave me a shot of cortisone and told me to take Benadryl  The itching has persisted and is keeping me up at night.  As I checked side affects for any medication I've been taking and I see the itching is a side affect of the drug, but everyone that has this condition has experienced the itching after they were on the Wellbutrin for awhile. Will my itching stop.  I feel great except for the itching.

In 2008, I began to experience episodes of extreme itching.  It was confined to small places (never quite the same) on my palms, fingers, soles of feet, and tops of feet.  There is no redness involved.  The itching seems to originate inside, rather than on the surface of the skin, and comes in pulses separated by about 15 seconds.  It lasts 20 or 30 minutes.  I thought I was going insane.  At the time, I was taking wellbutrin and celexa.  I began taking notes on the events, and found that when I became agitated, irritated by people, that is experiencing negative emotions, THAT was when these episodes begin.  Once, when my celexa ran out and it was a week before I could refill it, I noticed the intensity of these episodes was greatly reduced.  I self-medicated (bad idea) with the celexa, skipping it and doulbing up on dosage, and found a direct correlation with the itch intensity and the celexa.  My psychiatrist and I agreed to stop the celexa.  In the insuing years, I still have occasional itch episodes, usually during particularly intense scenes in movies, bad dreams, and when I am nervous in front of someone with whom I have unpleasant business to discuss.  Could it be that the wellbutrin also plays a role in this?  It is bearable, but is particularly annoying when it happens on my fingertips or along the midline of the sole of a foot.  Maybe I should discuss trying a different antidepressant with my doc.
