Retinol increased my pores

I have always had good skin but recently noticed a fine line just above my lip and also was getting creases on my face from my pillow so thought I could try retinol on the lines, I thought if I started early I had a good chance of erasing the lines as they are very fine. I used a dual retinol cream by avon for 2 nights, mainly on my cheeks and above my lip. After the first night I noticed that I had visible pores on my cheeks where I had none before and I was worried it was from the retinol I so tried to find info on the net about retinol but almost everything I read claimed retinol made pores smaller so I thought perhaps it was just a strange phase and used the retinol a second night. The next morning I had even more visible pores and they were even larger. I haven't used the cream for 2 days now and will not be using it again. I have exfoliated in the hope to get rid of the pores but it isn't helping. Am I stuck with enlarged pores forever now? I read that pores once stretched will stay that way. I would hate to be stuck with large pores permanently just because I used a cream for 2 nights. If anything, the patches of skin on my cheeks where I used retinol look much older than the skin on the rest of my face, by about 20 years! I am only 27 and I really regret using the retinol. Will my pores go back to normal, before this they were invisible? What can I do to get my skin back to how it was before I used the retinol?

Retin products make skin worse first. I used it several times for acne. Took about a month in each case to clear. My skin was better than before taking retin a. How is it that they didn't explain that? The doctors i mean.. This is the case with any skin product. Always worse first.

Also, avon is horrible brand. They are low end comedogenics for people who really dont have skin problems.

Hi,
I am not a dermatologist but I have what you can call a skincare addiction. From my research online, retinol initially enlarges the pores and thins the epidermis so that all of the gunk inside can get out, and so that cysts are exposed to the surface without the need of surgery. After 6 months to a year (or more in some cases), once all of the junk is out, your tissue grows significantly stronger and the epidermis thickens substantially, which is why so many people and doctors advocate the use of retinol. The key is to not give up :) You also may experience adverse effects if you have sensitive skin and/or use too much of the product. In my case, this has caused rough, red skin and breakouts. I am going through the same thing as you are, so don't worry and don't give up! If it really bothers you, you should go to a dermatologist. That's what I'm doing. Good luck!

In my case, enlarged pores did not go away. It was quite heartbreking, since they'd gone back to normal the first time around. So now I'm doing my best to just not try to make them worse...
Hey i am going through the same thing right now. How is your skin now? Have the pores gone back to normal after the continuous use of retinol. Please reply if you can. I am getting really worried. Thanks

Hi tanyam27, did they finally dissappear? The same thing happened to me this week. But after stopping use, my pores got back to normal a couple of days later. Without realizing Retinol was the problem, I re-used it last night and so today my pores are enlarged again. I guess that, like last time, they will also close in a couple of days, and I definitely won't use the Retinol again. How was your experience afterwards?

Again, you have to know what els is contain in the product you used.
Retinol alone will never cause a large pore,i know that it has substantiated capabilities of smoothing out a rough skin and tighten up enlarged pore.
In the past i have used this high percentage of retinol, which contains over 4% of vitamin a and it caused me no harm at all.
to Tanyam27, you used a cream from Avon that claims to have a retinol in it, which later caused you more visible pore size.
as we all know, these drugstore brands would normally over exaggerated their products and  the results which would never happen, and the cream you used might contain just a little tiny bit of Retinol which you couldn't expect any result, so your pore size issue may have caused by other factors, for example, alcohol , silicone , fragrance , etc.

Um I used extremely expensive Strivectin ar advanced retinol night treatment and woke up to my skin looking terrible and every pore on my face visible but not a bit of dryness or flaking so it has nothing to do with it being a drugstore brand.

Hey tanyam27,

I have the same exact problem, and was pretty disappointed that no one has answered your question. I haven't discussed my concerns with a doctor, but I do have a hunch as to what the problem may have been. I was prescribed 0.05% retin-a for post-acne marks. I used it on various spots of my face. However, on my cheeks (around my nose), I noticed small holes that had never been there before. They looked almost like small incision holes...i soon realized that these were pores. I was pretty upset, because before using retin-a, my pores were pretty much invisible. Not small, but invisible. And now, I have these holes around my nose. It may be because of how much retin-a was used. I remember slathering s good amount around this area 2 times. That may be the problem? Did you use a big amount? I don't have the answer to this exactly, but I'm considering checking in with the doctor. I will get back to you with information. If you learn any, is it possible that you could get back to me as well?
