Dozen black spots all over upper body

Hello there everyone,
For a couple years now I have noticed that my skin has developed a weird dark spotted colour on mostly my upper body.
It looks really iritating and weird and I would like to get rid of it as you can obviously imagine.
My doctor told me it is a type of skin fungus and recommended me a prodcut that I would have to use everytime i shower.
I used this product ever since and I haven't noticed any improvement. (it has been more than a year I used that product).
I would like to say that in summer 2006 I was stupid and used one of those nivea tanning cremes...But I remember that It was a fake colour that I would have been able to scrub off my skin which is not possible with the dark spots at the moment.
i alos took vitamin pills couple years ago which might have caused this as well..Again im not sure what the cause is but I consider my self a hygenic person. Not sure what it is, how it was caused and how it can be cured..
Any help would be greatly appreciated

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
From the symptoms it looks like pityriasis versicolor. Tinea versicolor is a common skin infection caused by the yeast Malassezia furfur. This skin disease commonly affects adolescents and young adults, especially in warm and humid climates.

Treatment involves topical and oral antifungal medicines. Most cases respond to over-the-counter products, which contain any of several basic ingredients: miconazole, tolnaftate, terbinafine, ketaconazole and clotrimazole. You can consult a pharmacist and get any cream or lotion containing these ingredients. If the symptoms persist then oral antifungals may be needed. A dermatologist’s consultation will be the best.
