rash around nose

My 16 year old son has had a red rash around his nose for about year now.  Some days it is much better than others but always very noticable.  He keeps his hands off of it and has tried all sorts of creams from hydrocortisone cream to yeast creams.  Here's the real key.  I know it is genetic because when I was his age I had the exact same thing and so did my daughter who is now 19.  None of us ever had any other skin problems, just a ugly rash around the nose.  Dermatologists were never able to help my daughter she just had to outgrow it.  I just linked it as genetic since my son now has it.  Any ideas what it could be and how to treat it?

a year later but i was just looking on the internet for information as i've had this rash for probably 10 years. i had it treated at one point, i saw a dermatologist and he said he knew what it was the second i walked in. unfortunatley i never got the name of it.  it must be genetic as my mother and younger brothers have had it as well. when i saw the dermatologist he prescribed me minocycline, a antiinfective drug. it cleared it up quite quickly and it was gone for about 2 years and now it's returned. i think it may be called or linked to 'perioral dermatitis' so try asking about that and minocycline and see if it helps.
