I am a type 2 Diabetic taking metformin and gliclazide.
I believe I have low serotonin levels and would like to start taking 5HTP rather than start taking antidepressants.

First of all, is this safe for me to take?  How much is a safe dosage?

Secondly, is this supplement effective?

Thanks!

You are right about not taking antidepressants. In my case, they caused me insulin resistance.
However, do not take any herbal supplement before asking your doctor.
I have read that serotonin levels are linked to insulin levels.

I would post this on the Alternative Medicine Forum where there are very knowlegable people regarding this.  Also, don't start any herb or natural supplement without consulting with your doctor, they too come with side effects.  Take care.
