Coming off low carb

I just did Atkins for 2 weeks. Never cheated at all. For a couple of reasons I decided to stop after the induction. I ate sensibly yesterday, but today I majorly blew it. I ate a decent sized piece of cake and some ice cream. Got home after an hour and my blood sugar was 194. I thought, ok, it will probably go down after 2 hours. Two hours later--still 194. I'm wondering if this is worrisome...I'm overweight, but we've been testing my blood sugar for years since my dad's diabetic and it's always been normal. So I'm not diabetic and we're trying to prevent that in the future.

I read that suddenly coming off very low carb can cause temporary insulin resistance. Could this cause my spike? And should I be worried that it's not coming down so far? I'm a little worried right now. 194 can't be good...

My previous post didn't post correctly.

Normal blood sugar should be:

< 100 for fasting
< 120 2 hours after eating

anything above 126 fasting and 140 2 hours after eating will already get you a confirmed diabetic diagnosis.

How do you know your glucose meter is accurate? Test with an A1c meter or get an A1c test at your doctors office. Nondiabetics will see results below 5%.

Well maybe a couple months ago I decided to test my blood sugar after eating because I was getting tired after eating and it would only be in the 120's 2 hours after eating. My fasting has *always* been below 100. It dropped tonight after 3 hours to 135. I'll take my fasting tomorrow just to make sure.

194 is definitely in diabetic range.

Coming off atkins would not cause such high levels unless you really are diabetic.

How do you know you are not diabetic?

Please test your fasting blood sugar in the mornings.  It should be 126 is already diabetic).

Test 2 hours after a normal meal.  it should be 140 is also diabetic).

If your numbers are higher than the above you should discuss with your doctor, increase exercise, lose weight, diet, etc. to manage it, take meds, if necessary.

Oops, I mean by two hours later that I tested it again an hour later after the first one. It was two hours after I ate.
