Finger pain and diabetes

My husband was recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes.  For the last two nights he has had a lot of pain in his right pointer finger.  it only hurts at night time.  any idea what ccould cause it

It sounds like it may be arthritis which tends to hurt more at night.

Does he change fingers when he does his finger sticks?  Next question is:  does he test at all, and if so, how often?
