HELP

Dear All,

I am new in this forum and kinda worried,,,hope you all may help. My boyfriend's father is 59 years and he is suffering from diabetes over the last 10 years. First the doc gave him pills and then switched to insulin. He takes two shots of insulin per day. I would like to ask is this type 1 or type 2 diabetes? Which of this is heriteded? Is there any risk that my future children can herited something like that from their grandfather? If the type of diabetes he has is not herited than it means that i dont have to worry alot about that? Do you guys know any website that explains well the both types, as im really confused.
Thank you very much.

I'm glad you posted. As a mother you should be concerned about your children's well being, especially if diabetes runs in the family [grandfather].

Normally this is type 2. Like Sally said, its from lifestyles but can also be passed from his parents.

"Which of this is heriteded?"
Without his medical records that is hard to say. Children often pick-up and continue the parents bad habits - poor food choices, over weight, lack of exercise, and so on. Other times they inherit the bad genes.

Is your boyfriend a diabetic? Has he been tested lately? How about you?
Your children?

Anyone can get diabetes. It doesn't have to be passed down from the previous generation but can skip generations. Go get tested, the entire family. The only way you're going to know if anyone is normal, borderline or full diabetic is by testing at a doctors office. this is likely type 2, which is lifestyle related.

predisposition to diabetes is hereditary, but with right and healthy lifestlyle is largely preventable.
