Maybe I should have. I drink a glass of milk when I take it and usually i've eaten before then.
Hi Kellie,
Glad your blood sugar is doing better. :) On your post on Undiagnosed Symptoms - you might want to have mentioned the Metformin or other medication - prescribed or not prescribed - as these can cause problems. Metformin is know for its GI symptoms but generally your body gets use to it. Just be sure you are taking it with a full glass of water and a bit of food and if taking a night time dose, take it about an hour before you plan to lay down. You can read more here http://www.webmd.com/drugs/mono-7061-METFORMIN+-+ORAL.aspx?drugid=11285&drugname=Metformin+Oral
Take care.
Well my blood sugar hasn't gotten over 190 since then, still going to the doctor though

" On a side note I had my liver and kidneys checked back when all this was just starting and the doc said both were fine." That was about 2 weeks ago. By "all this" I meant my blood sugar getting higher than usual and going a lot.
My blood sugar is being much better today, got up this morning without eating anything 100 and it hasn't gotten over 160 today even after eating. I'm still going to the doctor as soon as my parents will take me because i'm going like 10 times a day which has never happened to me before not even with a uti. On a side note I had my liver and kidneys checked back when all this was just starting and the doc said both were fine. I also had an A1c last month which scored somewhere on the 6-8 range with a average blood sugar of 126.
Hi, I have had diabetes for 35 years now. I was on oral meds for ten years but could not keep my glucose under contol. My Dr. did not want me to go on insulin but the meds were not working so I put myself on insulin! best thing I ever did.1 I have much more freedom at meal time, and my A1C's run in the low 6's. I now have kidney desease and feel that if I had not gone on insulin I would have been on dialysis by now. I usually take shots with each meal and monitor to see if I need more in between. It was inconvienient at first, but I've been at it for 15 yrs now and it's second nature. I know pretty much how much I need depending on what I eat and my physical activity. Physically I feel much better on insulin, whith a lot more energy than i did on oral meds. If you have trouble keeping your glucose levels under control this might be the way to go. Recomended levels for A1C's are less than seven. this is neccessary to forestall problems when you get older!
Glad you are going back to your doctor. :) Post what he or she says.
Unlike you, I have not been able to eat anything I want! Mine jumps if I eat too many carbs at once. I am getting better with the protein linking and excercising and have been able to stop the meds so hopefully I can keep this up for a while - as long as my fee hold up. :)
no matter what I eat no matter how little i my blood sugar goes from like 110 to 200+ and if i havent eaten anything for a few hours in the afternoon its in the 70 range. I'm going to the doctor as soon as possible. My blood sugar is usually much better that this. usually it will be like 90 and i can eat anything and it will go up to about 120.
Hi Kellie,
I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your glucose levels and hope you are feeling better.
You said you are taking Metformin. I am guessing since you just said Metformin you mean the regular type and not the long lasting type. Metformin is not a PRN drug - meaning you don't really take it based on a single blood sugar level. Instead, you take it as prescribed. It takes 1 hour after you take regular Metformin before it actually starts to get in your bloodstream but the drug needs to be taken for about a week before it starts to stabilize your blood sugar. So those extra doses are not really a good idea.
You said you ate breakfast then checked your blood sugar. It is real common for blood sugar levels to rise after eating. Generally, you wait 2 hours after you eat then check your blood sugar. You didn't say what you ate for breakfast but your snack was 2 pieces of cake and a V8 fusion - that is a lot of carbohydrates at one time so you can expect your blood sugar to jump up immediately after eating this even in someone who is not a diabetic. The apple, though good for you :), is still a carbohydrate so your sugar will again jump some.
Try balancing your carbohydrates with protein - for every 2 grams of carbohydrate, eat 1 gram of protein. This will help stabilize your blood sugar and hopefully prevent some of the jumps you are seeing. Eat about every 3 hours and drink your water between meals to keep hydrated. This will help with your blood sugar levels and once the level comes down and stabilizes, you won't be so hungry.
The frequent peeing is your body trying to get rid of the extra sugar. It is perfectly normal response to high sugar. Just keep drinking water to help replace so you won't get dehydrated. Even with your level below 100 you still need to keep hydrated. It is not good to get dehydrated while taking metformin. The general recommendation is that daily you drink in ounces half your body weight (in pounds). So if you weigh 200 pounds you drink at least 100 ounces. Here is a water calculator you can try: http://nutrition.about.com/library/blwatercalculator.htm
There are a lot of websites about management of diabetes plus you might want to talk with your physician on seeing someone for diabetes education.
