what does this reading mean?

Hi I have just had the results of my overnite blood fasting glucose test. It was 6.8
I know that means that I am prediabetic.
In 6 months time I am going to have a glucose tolerance test. Please what can I do to overcome being diabetic? Are there any website links that I can look at. I have read type 2 diabetes can be avoided by correct diet & exercise. I am 62 years old , a bit overweight , & genetically disposed to late onset type 2 dibetes! (my mum & grandmum died of the complications of the illness)
Thanks

You're welcome. Good luck to you and good for you for seeking to deal with pre-diabetes. Many people (including doctors!) don't see this as the opportunity it is to slow down the advance of diabetes.

The things you can do to slow the progression of your diabetes are: Lose weight and maintain a healthy body weight, exercise on a regular basis and learn about a diabetic diet, basically eliminate sugar and drastically cut all carbs such as cereal, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. Replace them with protein and fresh vegies. There are many many websites online regarding Type 2 diabetes. Complications from diabetes can be prevented by maintaining healthy blood sugars. I would suggest getting a meter and testing your blood sugar two hours after various meals so you see what foods and portions you can eat and stay under 140.
