Strange symptoms

I am a 25 year old caucasian female, married with an 8 month old child. After having an ongoing sinus infection for more than a month, I have developed a sudden alcohol intolerebce. Just one drink will give me severe nausea, vomiting and loose stools. I now have sulfur tasting burps, increased gas and continuing nausea. Food does sound appealing at all. What could be causing this? I have been diagnosed with IBS in the past, but this is totally different.

Hi!
I can understand your concerns. I’ll start with the sulfur tasting burps. Sulfur taste in mouth is usually associated with problems like post nasal drip (quite possible in your case as you had sinusitis), diabetes, liver problems and initiation of sulfur forming bacteria in mouth. Food allergies to sulfur dioxide (used as preservative in certain food items) and vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause a sulfur taste in mouth.

Since you have developed allergy or intolerance to alcohol, it can be due to either liver problem caused by antibiotic and other medication use. It can also be due to sulfur dioxide, used as preservatives in various wines and alcohols.

I suggest you take probiotics for a few days and see. Meanwhile consult your doctor for a liver panel, vitamin B12 level and diabetes. Also log in the food you eat that contains sulfur dioxide (check labels) and see if get similar symptoms.

Please consult your family physician to start with. I sincerely hope you will find this information useful in your journey towards better health.

Hope you feel better soon! Good Luck and take care!
