YOu didn't specify age or family history.
Important to know..is there blood in his stool, does he suffer fever/chills night sweats or weight loss. If all no's........then he probably has irritable bowel syndrome...do an internet search, there is a society for it.. increase his fiber in his diet. Its typical to get alternating constipation and diarrhea. Have him see his family practice doc,....he/she will ask him questions from the ROME criteria which lists the symptoms of IBS. It is HIGHLY unlikely he has a parasite if you haven't travelled, ate uncooked or exotic foods and if his stool lacks blood (no bright red blood or black stools)
hope that helps

Thank so much for your posts. I greatly appreciate them. I will get him to have an analyst test done. It
That is the way mine started out and tests finally revealed cdif bacteria but it seemed to return after i have been treated for it after a short while of retuning to an almost normal stool. Have been refered to a gastro doc will tell ya more if i find out. but do get on it coz the docs seem in no hurry to help and scratch their heads alot wondering what it is.
It sounds like a bacterial infection and/or parasites. He needs an analyst test done. Your best bet is to have the test done I have mentioned in other posts. The labs are inadequate in diagnosing these conditions and the Great Smokies Lab has a very extensive test that will determine what's going on with him. That's how I got my daughter diagnosed and she had test upon test and she remained mis-diagnosed for a year and two months. I hate for anyone to go through being sick for such a long time.
