GERD and Hiatal Hernia... Help!!!

hello.... i have been having chest pains in the left side of my chest and sometimes they get quite severe. The pain radiates into my left shoulder blade. Also when I take in a deep breath at times and then it seems to go away. I have had cardiac work ups and everything there is fine. I have been diagnosed with GERD and a sliding hiatal hernia. i was wondering if the pain can be caused by the hernia or gerd or could it be another underlying problem? i have had an ultrasound of the gallbladder also and that came back ok.
any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

The surgery you are referring to is Nissan Funduplication surgery. It is done laproscopically.  When I had my done 7 years ago I was told it would be the cure all forever.  Now they are finding out that it is only good for 7 to 10 years.  My "wrap" came undone last year.  I'm not sure I would want to have that surgery again.  But ask your GI doctor about this.  They can give you more insight into the pros and cons of having this surgery done.  If you don't have really good insurance, please be forwarned as it is VERY EXPENSIVE surgery.  Take care and best of luck to you.

Hi there, I have also been diagnosed with a hiatia hernia and yes it seems to cause me similar pains although mine tend not to radiate into my sholder blades, they certainly give me a feeling of chest pain. My doctor has prescribed nexium for this, their is also an operation on the stomach to rectify the hernia. I am yet to investigate this fully, maybe someone else can help with that one?
